Who does what in India
- FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is the national food safety authority. It sets standards and regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
- State/UT Food Safety Departments (Commissioners of Food Safety, Designated Officers and Food Safety Officers) carry out most licensing, registration and inspections locally.
- Registration vs. licence: small businesses usually need a registration; larger ones need a State or Central licence. The category depends on your business type and size. Check on FoSCoS or with your local food safety office.
- Other approvals (municipal trade licence, fire safety, pollution control, GST and others) may also apply and are not covered by this tool.
